description [edit ]

Gustav Klimt depicts the pair locked in an intimate embrace against a gold, apartment background. The two figures are situated at the edge of a spot of flowery hayfield that ends under the womanhood ‘s expose feet. The man wears a gown printed with geometric patterns and insidious eddy. He wears a crown of vines while the woman wears a crown of flowers. She is shown in a flow attire with floral patterns. The man ‘s boldness is not shown to the audience and rather, his face is bent down to press a kiss to the charwoman ‘s cheek, and his hands are cradling the woman ‘s boldness. Her eyes are closed, with one arm wrapped around the man ‘s neck, the other resting gently on his hand, and her expression is upturned to receive the man ‘s kiss. The patterns in the painting suggests the dash of Art Nouveau and the constituent forms of the Arts and Crafts movement. At the same time, the background evokes the conflict between two- and three-dimensionality intrinsic to the work of Degas and early modernists. Paintings such as The Kiss are ocular manifestations of fin-de-siecle spirit because they capture a degeneracy conveyed by deluxe and sensuous images. The function of gold leaf recalls chivalric gold-ground paintings, illuminated manuscripts, earlier mosaics, and the coiling patterns in the clothes recall Bronze Age art and the cosmetic tendrils seen in western artwork since ahead classical times. The world ‘s head ends identical close to the top of the canvas, a departure from traditional western canons that reflects the determine of japanese prints, as does the painting ‘s simplified composition. Klimt ‘s don was a traveling artisan specializing in amber engravings, but Klimt ‘s function of gold leaf in paintings was inspired by a trip he made to Italy in 1903. When he visited Ravenna he saw the Byzantine mosaics in the church of San Vitale. For Klimt, the flatness of the mosaics and their miss of position and depth lone enhanced their golden glare, and he started to make unprecedented habit of gold and flatware leaf in his own workplace. [ 9 ] It has besides been argued that in this painting Klimt represented the here and now Apollo kisses Daphne, following the Metamorphoses of Ovid narrative. [ 10 ] art historians have besides suggested that Klimt depicts the narrative of Orpheus and Eurydice. More specifically, Klimt seems to be showing the exact here and now when Orpheus turns approximately to caress Eurydice and loses his love everlastingly. As shown in this paint, the charwoman being held is slightly translucent, indicating a fading away or disappearance—as told in the report .
