La Roche-Posay Glycolic B5 10% with Kojic Acid ► Chamber I use ► What is Kojic Acid? Kojic acid’s main use, and benefit, is to lighten visible sun damage, age spots, and scars. It finally gives you those anti-aging effects you’re looking for. How Kojic Acid Works Unlike other acids that work by dissolving the bonds between cells and exfoliating the skin, kojic acid works by inhibiting the production of pigment, which is responsible for… pigment. Inhibits and prevents the formation of tyrosine, which is an amino acid necessary for the production of melanin. Unlike alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids, kojic acid will not even out your skin tone by chemically exfoliating the outermost dead layer of skin. Is Kojic Acid Safe? Kojic acid is well tolerated. There are problems with contact dermatitis. Something to keep in mind, that’s why I would try it first before applying it to the face. First in the arms, then in the neck. But generally speaking, kojic acid is better tolerated than most acids, but allergy or irritation is certainly possible. However, it has been approved for use in cosmetics at concentrations of 1% or less. How long does it take for kojic acid to work? Don’t throw it away if nothing has changed in 2 weeks. You may see better results, or faster results, if you also add glycolic acid to the treatment or another ingredient that won’t be achieved in a short time. Now: Kojic acid has become a favorite product for some dermatologists, especially since some of their patients who have experienced dryness or irritation from hydroquinone have an easier experience using products containing kojic acid when they made this switch. Kojic Acid Benefits Overall, kojic acid is a great alternative to products that have failed in the past when it comes to fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation, caused by acne scarring, excessive sun exposure, or hormonal changes. Should I use kojic acid? Please note that it should not be used for skin lightening if there are no dark spots. It is best reserved for reversing existing dark and hyperpigmented areas on the face. There is a skin care product from Japan called Kikumasamune lotion, I don't know if you have heard of it, but this lotion (it's actually more like a toner from what I've seen because it is of a very watery consistency, but for some reason in Japan they call it a lotion) but this lotion is basically sake fermented rice water which is where kojic acid is derived from. I have heard that sake is kojic in it's natural state and whenever it's processed in labs turning it into acid it becomes synthetic. So, Kikumasamune I guess would be more natural as it comes directly from the fermented rice. I would like to try Kikumasamune lotion but I am hesitant to do so because in the past I had an allergic reaction to kojic acid soap, real bad contact dermatitis where my skin actually marbled (don't know if this lotion from Japan should be compared to kojic acid soap which maybe is more synthetic) but because of my past allergic reaction to it, I don't know if trying kojic acid in its natural state from fermented rice would be okay for me. Dr. Aspires, could you please give me your opinion on the matter? It would be very helpful to have your input and greatly appreciated as well, thank you.

how are you? i hope life is treating you well. I would like to address this concern of mine because I'm using kojic acid soap twice daily to remove dark spots or acne scars or melasma on my face. is it safe to use a facial cleanser or toner that has both salicylic acid, vitamin c and niacinamide in its formulation. how often should I use the cleanser. thanks doc, stay well

  14. Enid Rosario says:

I am using Intensive Dark Spot Treatment from Feli Naturals. It contains Hyaluronic Acid, Tranexamic Acid, Aloe Vera, Vitamin C, Vitamin E for AM. It contains Kojic Acid, Salicylic Acid, 4-Butylresorcinol, Alpha Arbutin, and Lactic Acid for PM. Lots of good ingredients for reducing melasma and hyperpigmentation and acne scars. I have melasma on right cheek and upper lip. The cheek is clearing up with this product. The upper lip is lightening, but aware that it may take 3 months or more. Patience is needed. I use Intense Protect SPF 50 by Avene. Very important to use sunscreen to stop hyperpigmentation from getting darker. Also I have dry and sensitive skin, and these products have not irritated my face.
